You would have often seen tennis players grab a handful of balls from the ball-boys/girls before settling in on a couple of them and stuffing them into their pockets. Why do players who are looking to make a tennis serve look so intently at the balls and only then choose the ones they want? Here's why. It is a common practice for tennis players to check the ball before serving. There are many reasons why a player may want to do so, but most commonly it is to make sure that the ball is still in good condition. Generally, a tennis ball can be used for up to eight hours of play before it starts losing its elasticity and becomes less effective for hitting.
