2019 was a super successful year for Headis (also called the Head Ping Pong or Ping Pong with Head) and we have no doubt that 2020 will be even better. The game, an exotic and edgy form of table-tennis but where the most important part of equipment is the head, is firmly on the map, with tournaments in Germany and Europe, but also Headis tournaments, championships and organised Headis games starting in Eastern Europe and the USA. Tournaments are updated throughout the year with new applications being made all the time, so keep an eye out for anything new. It’s not too late to register for any of the following tournaments, especially if you are a new, competitive and talented Headis player. Upcoming 2020 Headis Tournament List Meenzer Schwellköpperei, Mainz 2020 Date: 18 January 2020 Address: Hindemithstraße. 1-5, 55127 Mainz Practice or warm up is from 11 am The Tournament begins at High Noon The weekend of 18 January 2020 also includes two tournaments in Mainz The Headis World Cup - Saturday The Headis Masters - Sunday Players will include all the high ranking Headis champions with a few new and up-and-coming names joining the party. Speaking of party, there is no charge for audience members. Deutsche Quali, Darmstadt Czech Republic 2020 Date: 21 February 2020 Address: Elly-Heuss-Knapp School Darmstadt Kohlbergweg 1, Darmstadt. Dormitory: Nieder-Ramstädter Str. 170, Darmstadt European World Championships Watch this space for times and full details. Free participation for players and for the audience and anyone who likes to party. This is the first time there will be game play for women, and applications are currently being accepted and reviewed. Teatime Madness, Darmstadt Czech Republic 2020 Date: 22 February 2020 Address: Elly-Heuss-Knapp School Darmstadt Kohlbergweg 1, Darmstadt. Dormitory: Nieder-Ramstädter Str. 170, Darmstadt Teatime Madness is right after the European World Championships, same venue with the possibility of new champions! Details are still being finalized. Headis Mountain Cup, Les 2 Alpes 2020 Date: 16 March 2020 Address: Turnieradresse: Böllenfalltorhalle – Nieder-Ramstädter Str. 170, 64285 Darmstadt This tournament is likely to be on the Monday but like all future Heads tournaments, the details are still being finalised. Entry is free for all competitors. Lots of partying, lots of fun, and all the top players are likely to be there, plus a whole lot of new ones. Headis Cup Hannover Date: 04 and 05 April 2020. Hannover Address: Maschstraße 16, 30169 Hannover The tournaments starts at 12 noon with the warm up at 11.00 am. This is another double feature in Germany which is sure to be loads of fun and supremely competitive, and includes German qualification for the EO and the Headis Cup Hannover. Like most tournaments, there are free goodie bags for all the tournament players and two free overnight stays in the hall. Headis World Championship Date: 24 and 25 July 2020 Address: Kaiserslautern, tba Kaiserslautern is where Headis first began in 2006 and it therefore makes perfect sense for the Heads World Championship to take place here. The qualification rounds will be on the 24th, with the actual championship on the 25th. The tournament is wide open and there will be existing champions and new up-and-coming exciting players. Anyone can enter with registration still open to the general public. We will update this list with more of the Headis tournaments over the next few weeks as we head (no puns!) into the later stages of the year. The Growth of Headis in Recent Times It’s still very early days for Headis tournaments. Headis is played at a number of German universities, as well as at sports clubs, and there are always informal Headis championships and tournaments at the universities. If you are a student, sign up for all the sports news and if Headis is played on campus, you will soon know about it anyway. The sport has developed an enormous following amongst students, but not only amongst students. Anyone who loves table tennis will have a good chance of falling in love with Headis. It’s a variation of the game, just a little edgier. The table is the same size as an ordinary table-tennis table, the net is the same height but more solid, the ball is made of rubber, the player uses his head as a bat and then it’s quite wild. There are Headis rules that must be adhered to, especially in a serious championship or Headis tournament, but this is one game where you will see men, and women, sporting tattoos, leaping from side to side of the table, leaping on the table, leaping up and over the table, crouching left, crouching right, using all their upper arm strength and of course, all their head strength too. It’s a game of skill; not everyone can be a Headis star, even if they can play table-tennis. It’s a mix of table tennis and headering in football, and is one of the fastest games there is. How to watch Headis (if you cannot make it to the tournaments)? You can watch Headis games online on Youtube. Because it is such a young sport - young as in the players are generally at university or college - it also has a large presence on Social Media. Many of the tournaments are streamed, or at least put on video and all social media platforms for the fans around the world. If you cannot get to any of the above tournaments, and remember there will be more, then make use of the fabulous Internet to keep up to date with the game, the news, the champions and the results.
