Which Pickleball Tournaments and Championships Will Be Played This Year?

Pickleball During Pandemic

There are a lot of Pickleball tournaments and championships scheduled for throughout the year, including a World Championship. Below we speak about some of the top pickleball tournaments which will be played throughout the season.

In fact if you look at the Pickleball calendar, you will see that there are Pickleball tournaments almost every weekend, in different states of America. On certain weekends there are several tournaments going on at the same time.

In 2020, sadly, you will also see that a lot of the Pickleball tournaments have been cancelled or postponed because of the Covoid19 Pandemic that is currently and terribly sweeping the world.

The Minto US Open Pickleball Championship

The Minto US Open Pickleball Championship would usually be the Premier Pickleball Championship. It takes place on an annual basis and apart from being hugely competitive, it is also loads of fun.

This year the championship would have taken place in Naples, Florida, in April and it has been cancelled until next year. Watch this space to see if perchance anything changes or even if new dates are announced.

The World Pickleball Championship

2019 saw the very first World Pickleball Championship. It was a USD 100,000 event, took place from the 27th to the 30th of December, and had over 1500 Pickleball players from all around the world.

There were several categories including age, professional and senior events, and the rankings were determined by a player’s 8 highest or best results over the year. Some of the professional players included Rosti Sobek, Abbie Brooks, and Vivienne David, as well as Patrick Smith, Pablo Tellez and Jarrod Smith.

The dates for the 2020 World Pickleball Championship are still to be announced, but chances are it would be in December again, over a period of four days.

March 2020 Pickleball Tournaments

Almost all March tournaments, including the Paddle Beach Round Robin, the 2020 Battle of the Paddles, and the Recreation Plantation Resort tournaments have been cancelled.

Not all the tournaments listed show cancellations or postponements, but it is unlikely they will continue. This is a huge loss for the Pickleball community and Pickleball layers, especially because these tournaments are all so much fun, but everyone understands it is the sensible thing to do.

April 2020 Pickleball Tournaments

We are seeing a lot of April Pickleball tournaments cancelled too. Where the tournaments are not cancelled, we imagine the conveners are in discussion.

A tournament like the Albuquerque 50+ tournament is a big loss for players. Pickleball is incredibly popular amongst seniors and apart from being competitive, it is also hugely social. Sadly, it’s hard to practice social distancing when you play sport, especially team sport, and Pickleball is mostly played as doubles.

May 2020 Pickleball Tournaments

At this point, there are a lot of May Pickleball tournaments. Again, nobody quite knows how any future sporting events will pan out but for now the Pickleball tournaments in May, and for the rest of the year, are still showing that they are in full swing. Here is a list of some of the Pickleball tournaments to look forward to:

  • 2020 Mama Loves Pickleball, Templeton Tennis Ranch, California. 01 to 03 May 2020.
  • iPickle Players Championship Cup, La Habra California, 03 to 05 May 2020.
  • 2020 Doc Holliday Shootout Pickleball tournament, Georgia, 01 to 03 May 2020.
  • May Madness San Antonio, 01 to 03 May 2020
  • Pickle for the Pets Charity Tournament, Prescott Arizona, 01 to 03 May 2020.

We especially love the idea of a Pickleball charity tournament that is for the benefit of pets. Remember, Pickleball, or so the legend goes, was named after a dog called Pickles.

There are MANY more Pickleball tournaments for the rest of the year and you can look at this website to keep updated. Your sports club will also keep you updated of any tournaments in your area.

Of course, nobody knows where we are going with sporting events for 2020, and that is for all sports, not just for Pickleball. For people who cannot get to Pickleball courts right now because they’re social distancing, or in quarantine, you can practice your shots at home. And here is hoping things will soon get back to normal.

Over time we will keep updating this with the latest pickleball tournaments which will be played each year.

If you are a pickleball organiser and want to add your event to this list above, you can do so for free by emailing in to us here, using your official email ID and the tournament details.
